We do not advocate increasing debt, but if you've saved up quite a bit from a summer job or can afford the payments, we would recommend buying a car from our Top 10 list. The Mazda3 is is the highest priced car in our Top 10 list but it's also one of the most fun to drive and sexy cars in its class. The rear seat is tighter than most though because of the awesome front seats, so be sure to check out other models on our list too.
#9 Suzuki SX4 Crossover w/ Tech Package: $18,868 - $Gas card = ~$18,750
The Suzuki SX4 Crossover is pretty high on our list for such a value-minded brand. Where the Mazda was about $1,000 more, the SX4 offers a touch-screen navigation system and available AWD. Handling and styling may not be as attention grabbing, but the SX4 is capable of getting you to class and taking you down some dirt roads to the lake too.
#8 Hyundai Elantra Touring GLS: $19,035 - $1,000 incentive = $18,035
Elantra. A car that has evolved from lacking character to becoming one of the most popular compact vehicles in today's market. With firm handling, good looks, plenty of cargo space, and that warranty we will never hear the end of (or Billy Fuccillo). We drove this car for a week and enjoyed every bit of it, from the stable highway ride to the smooth city cruising thanks to the continuously-variable transmission. The Nissan Sentra also received a few updates for 2010, so it'll be about 3 years before a more stylish (hopefully) generation comes out.

This generation of the Ford Focus is entering its final year. The redesigned model arrives in showrooms mid-2011 and will be a completely different vehicle (think enlarged Fiesta). The current generation is great nonetheless, with good handling characteristics, vibrant colors, SYNC connectivity and speech recognition, and good crash test scores.
#2 Mitsubishi Lancer ES: $18,140 - $1,500 incentive = $16,640
The Lancer isn't a star seller like other cars in its class, but it's truly better than all of them in almost every category. It comes standard with seven airbags, including a driver's knee airbag, tight steering, and a well-composed ride. Styling inside and out is masculine, with a menacing look up front, and all-black and aluminum inside. It's a great value and a top contender on our list.
#1 Kia Forte EX: $17,690 - $1,500 incentive = $16,460
The Kia Forte reigns supreme on our list because it's simply really good in all of our categories. It's very fuel efficient, it handles and performs admirably, it's a 2010 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it seats you and your friends comfortably in every seating position. It takes the Civic's design and makes it sleeker, more modern. The interior is nicely designed with style-infused buttons and switchgear, and it all glows a hot red at night.
