The 2009 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible has been largely unchanged since it was introduced back in 2003. The convertible, much like its hatchback variant, has found a large following with women. Wearing voluptuous curves, the Beetle can be covered in some of the softest tones available from Harvest Moon Beige to Heaven Blue Metallic. The soft top is available in two colors, black and cream, allowing buyers to mix and match some color options. Those wanting something a little more exclusive and classy can opt for the limited issue Blush Edition. Our tester was a fully loaded Blush Edition that featured signature lipstick red leather interior with a matching red top. The Blush’s white gold metallic paint really sparkles when the sun hits it and dazzles all those that care to stare.
The operation of the top was fairly straightforward; simply twist a lever to unlock it, and then press a button to drop it. Those in sunny climates with predictable weather can opt to cover the dropped roof with a color-matching boot that will add some visual flair to this breezy flower child. Putting the top back up was a little difficult, as it required some extra effort to lock it back in place.
On the inside you are treated by the same interior found on the beetle hatch only with slightly different accent colors on the doors. The A-pillar in this car is massive. Though it is not impossible to see around this thick pillar, it is a visual interruption that leaves you wanting for less. The backseat is small and made strictly for two petite individuals.
Though it might sound like I am stating the obvious here, the Volkswagen Beetle Convertible is not a masculine car in any way. That being said, the temperament of this convertible’s performance and driving dynamics are not awe inspiring. This car is a cruiser, plain and simple, and should be driven like one. And besides, a convertible is a car made for people who want to be seen, so having a very powerful engine would kind of defeat the purpose. The Beetle Convertible is shunned from 0 to 60 mph in 9.1 seconds by a 2.5 liter 150 hp engine, producing 170 ft-lbs of torque. I found this 5-cylinder engine provided adequate power and great (but not blissfully fast) acceleration.
For chicks interested in this car, I would certainly recommend it, as it is cute and certainly would attract the many glances from the guys you will be passing around campus and town. I also recommend those in the market for the Beetle Convertible take a look at the MINI Cooper Convertible as its posh and sporty personality matches the cute and cuddly Beetle’s.
The 2009 Beetle convertible starts at $25,990. A bit pricey but remember exclusivity has price and you'll probably be the only person on the street who has one.
theCD’s take: The 2009 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible is great for the female fashionista, but ok for the “curious” and “questioning” male. The convertible is stylish and unique with very few vehicles able to compare to it.
