Today, Mitsubishi is recalling 29,353 of its Lancer and Lancer Evolution models made for the 2008 and 2009 model years due to corrosion concerns. The problem stems from an airbag sensor that can corrode due to contact with road salt. This can cause the sensor to fail, creating a situation where the airbag may deploy too late or not at all in the event of a collision. The recall is mainly targeted at people living in rust belt states, though those who do a lot of traveling to these states are covered by the recall as well.
Mitsubishi will replace the airbag sensor with a new corrosion resistant sensor free of charge. Affected drivers can call 888-648-7820, to schedule an appointment.
