Tesla could be putting the factory of their next-generation Model S right in California after this weeks approval by the City Council in Downey. The city is located 20 miles southeast of Los Angeles, and the proposed site used to be a NASA manufacturing plant.

The current owners, Downey Studios, converted the property into a movie studio and business park. The plant is expected to bring about 1,500 much needed jobs to the area if Tesla goes with it.

Tesla was approved for $465 million in loans from the U.S. Department of Energy to build the Model S, which can travel 300 miles on a single charge and is expected to go into production in late 2011.
