The acclaimed Toyota MR-2, on a hiatus since 2005, may return to the US market.

Although there has been no official statement from Toyota concerning the revival of the mid-engine coupe, rumors are circulating that the new MR-2 will be reintroduced with the hybrid technology seen on the 3rd generation Prius.

Toyota’s proven hybrid technology mated to a lighter, sexier car is sure to offer superior efficiency and power with an affordable price tag, around $24,000 for a base model. If this turns out to be correct, the MR-2 will squarely compete with the Honda CR-Z, which will be released around the same time.

Some speculate that a sub 7 second run to 60 mph and 60 mpg are realistic specs for the highly anticipated reintroduction of this Toyota icon.
