While some domestic automakers like GM and Ford continue to release new models into their product lineup, Chrysler has been surprisingly inactive. That is partially the reason why we were surprised to spot what looks like a redesigned Dodge Durango.

Although there is much speculation at this point, the 2012 Durango (code-named WD) will most likely share a platform with the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Fiat, Chrysler’s most recent partner, is likely to release a vehicle on the same platform as well.

Dodge has held onto the Durango name since its introduction in 1998, and it is possible that Dodge’s full-size SUV will receive a redesigned platform as well as a new name for 2012. It’s also a possibility that this Dodge may not carry the badging of a Dodge at all, but rather RAM.

We can expect to see the next-gen 3.6L V6 as well as the 5.7L Hemi V8 for powertrain options. A Fiat-sourced diesel is also a possibility.

Expect to see this new SUV roll off the assembly line in Detroit toward the end of 2010.

theCD’s take: Chrysler really needs a knockout to keep them alive. Hopefully this new SUV, whether it is badged a Dodge or a RAM, can deliver the punch they need to stay in the game.
