Since 1979 the famous Dakar Rally has been hailed as one of the toughest off road races the world has to offer. Around the beginning of the year, the annual rally-raid style race takes place over several days and thousands of miles.
The Dakar is one of the oldest and longest running rally races in the world. This year marks the second time the race has been held in South America. Terrorism threats along the traditional route in Western Africa cancelled the race in 2008.
The South American Dakar offers unique challenges, but cannot be considered any less difficult. This year’s route runs through the countries of Argentina and Chile, beginning in Buenos Aires and including a connection in Santiago. 14 stages make up the route for a total length of 5,951 miles.
Over 550 competitors have come from over 50 countries to challenge the daunting landscape. Surprisingly, amateurs make up at least 80% of the participants. Blistering deserts torment teams and their vehicles alike, be it a rally SUV, buggy, motorbike or large T4 truck.
Anyone feel like watching? The Versus Channel offers race coverage in 30 minute segments everyday at 4:30 and 6:30 pm until the end of the race on January 18th. For more information, visit the official Dakar webpage. Also, enjoy the following clips.
