Starting February 22 (Monday), teens in the state of New York are going to have to go through a lot more hoops to get their license.
Young drivers will have to spend 30 additional supervised hours behind the wheel, bringing the total up to 50. Of those 50, 15 of them have to be after sunset.
Teens under 18 who get a learners permit will also have to wait six months before taking a road test. Before, those with a permit could schedule a road test the day after they get their permit.
The limited junior license will disappear and drivers with a junior license will only be allowed to have one person under 21 years old in the car, unless there's a parent in the car too. This doesn't apply to teens who already have a license, who will still be able to drive with two friends in the car.
The state says that 50 percent of teens are less likely to be in a crash if their parents set rules.
theCD's take: Ford's MyKey system couldn't have come to market at a better time. Too bad the government wasn't in on the awesome technology.
