Kumho is looking to the future of tire design. At the Frankfurt IAA Show last September, the Korean tire manufacturer showcased a laser etching technology that poses significant implications for the tire industry.

A custom prototype tire was put on display with intricate tread patterns that included depictions of Kumho's corporate logo. The model illustrated that initially, a traditional tread design would be molded into the tire and afterwards the surface could be etched with additional half-depth reliefs without detriment in regard to the tire's operation. In other words, a classic case of form following function.

Kuhmo leads us to believe that this technology will be put to use very soon. The company expects to design increased aerodynamic sidewalls and offer customer tire personalization in the future. So in time we may be able to put our own names, slogans and personal messages in the tracks we leave behind.

The way we burn through tires, it will be good to see how long these customizations really last. Although perhaps it can make a useful tire-wear indicator. When the etching disappears, it's time to design your next set of skins.
